Tambayan Mastery Workshops

What Does Tambayan Mean?

In Filipino culture, it is the place where your people gather. The corner where serious conversations happen, where craft is sharpened, and where community deepens. At Bayan Ceramics Studio, the Tambayan Workshops are exactly that — a dedicated space within our village for makers who are ready to go further.

Whether you are a Post-Immersion student building on your foundation or a Bayan existing member pushing toward mastery, the Tambayan Workshops are where your creative journey enters its next chapter. Two distinct programs. One shared spirit of Husay — the relentless, joyful pursuit of excellence.

Tambayan Wednesdays

  • Twice each month, the Bayan instruction studio transforms into Oak Park's most focused ceramics learning environment. Tambayan Wednesdays are intimate, instructor-led sessions designed to take your technical skills beyond the fundamentals — one challenging technique at a time.

Each session concentrates on a single advanced focus: collaring and altering symmetry, complex trimming, slab and coil integration with thrown forms, surface decoration techniques like Sgraffito and Mishima, glaze layering and chemistry, large-scale throwing, and more. You will leave every Tambayan Wednesday with a skill you did not have when you arrived.

This is not a class. It is a gathering of makers who have chosen to go deeper — together.

  • Tambayan Wednesdays are open to Post-Immersion graduates and Bayan members who have completed at least Phase 1 of the Bayanihan Immersion Series and are comfortable working independently at the wheel.

    • When: Two designated Wednesdays per month — dates announced monthly via The Flow and our member portal

    • Where: Instruction Studio Area

    • Duration: 3 hours per session

    • Capacity: 12 to 16 participants per session — intimate by design

    • What to Bring: Your hands, your curiosity, and your willingness to be challenged

    • Post-Immersion Students: $75 per session

    • Members: $60 per session (20% Member Discount)

    • Member Bundle: 4 sessions for $220 ($55 per session — best value)

Tambayan Weekends

  • Four times each year, once per season, Bayan Ceramics Studio welcomes a visiting Artist in Residence to lead and immersive weekend workshop inside our member studio sanctuary. These are not ordinary workshops. They are transformative experiences that bring a master’s voice, vision, and technique directly into your hands, while the rest of the studio continues its regular rhythm of classes and creation next door.

Each Tambayan Weekend unfolds across three experiences. Together they form a complete arc - from introduction to immersion to completion - designed to leave every participant changed.

  • Tambayan Weekends are open to Post-Immersion, Bayan Members, and to outside artists from other studios (must have at least one year’s experience at the wheel). Bayan members receive priority registration - spots are released to Post-Immersion students and outside artists if space remains after the member registration window closes.

    • When: Quarterly - one per season. Dates and visiting artist announcements release via The Flow and our social channels.

    • Where: Bayan Member Studio Area - a premium, dedicated space for advanced work

    • Capacity: 10 to participants per weekend - intimate, focused, and transformative by design

  • The weekend opens with an intimate gathering in the spirit of Kapwa - connection. Open to registered workshop participants, Bayan members, and the broader Bayan community, the Meet the Artist evening features wine, conversation, a short artist talk, and a live demonstration. Meet the artist, understand their philosophy, and arrive Saturday morning ready to create.

    • Open To: Registered weekend participants, Bayan members, and the public

    • Admission: Complimentary for registered weekend participants

    • Public Admission: $25 per person

  • Afternoon into Evening | 6 Hours. A focused, hands-on session led by the visiting artist. Deep instruction, direct feedback, and the kind of learning that only happens when a master is in the room.

  • Morning to Afternoon | 6 Hours. The second session builds on Saturday’s foundation - pushing further, refining technique, and bringing each participant’s work toward completion under the artist’s continued guidance.

  • Tambayan Weekends pricing reflects the caliber and profile of each visiting Artist in Residence and is announced with each individual workshop. Bayan members receive a 20% discount on all Tambayan Weekend workshops and enjoy priority registration before spots are released to the public.
