I was born in the Philippines and moved to the U.S. when I was just four years old, surrounded by the love and strength of my four older brothers and our parents. From the start, my family lived by the spirit of bayanihan—a beautiful Filipino value that celebrates community, compassion, and collective care.

Now, more than 50 years later, that spirit continues to guide me in everything I do—as a mother, a wife, and a creative soul. Over ten years ago, I was diagnosed with a chronic condition that changed my life. It led me to slow down, reflect, and begin a journey of healing through mindfulness. In 2023, I found pottery—and with it, a way to center myself, express my emotions, and reconnect with joy.

While I’ve loved the studios I’ve been part of and love the people I’ve met, I felt a deep calling to give back. I wanted to create a space that feels like home—a place where people of all backgrounds can come together, create, and heal. That dream became Bayan Studio.

Bayan is more than a ceramics studio. It will be a sanctuary for creativity, connection, and community. I invite you to join me in shaping something beautiful—one piece of pottery, one shared moment, one act of bayanihan at a time.

About Me

The First Studio Wheel

Bayanihan is a Filipino custom and cultural value that describes the spirit of communal unity, cooperation, and selfless effort to achieve a common goal. Derived from the word bayan, meaning "community" or "nation," it represents neighbors working together without expecting anything in return.

The Bayanihan Spirit

The “For Lease” Sign

My journey into the world of clay began quietly in the Fall of 2023 at a local studio right here in Oak Park. Like many busy professionals, my life was a constant stream of stresses and demands. Pottery quickly became my lifeline—a ritual of slowing down, a chance to meditate and truly center myself amidst the chaos. The simple, rhythmic action of the wheel was transformative.

I was hooked, and I knew I needed to commit to this practice. I sought to become a full member, eager to secure my own shelf and 24/7 access. - That's when I hit the barrier many artists face: the dreaded waitlist.

For almost two years, I remained dedicated, enjoying my time as a student and squeezing in practice during the limited student open studio hours. The need for a dedicated, accessible creative space was a constant, frustrating reality. I looked at other studios in the area and it was the same thing - wait lists.

Then, in September 2025, fate stepped in. I was walking across the street from my house when I saw a "For Lease: Call Joe" sign on an incredible old building. Later that week, I called Joe, walked over, and the moment I stepped inside that massive, raw space, I simply knew.

That spontaneous moment—the collision of my long-held need for a pottery home and the sudden discovery of the perfect space—was the birth of Bayan Studio.

Bayan Studio is not just as a business - it’s an opportunity to create a community and space that is supportive, accessible, and a well-equipped open environment that I, and countless other budding and established artists in our community, waited years for. This will be a space where passion can bloom, mindfulness is promoted, artistic expression is shared, and the spirit of bayanihan thrives.

As we prepare for our April 2026 grand opening, Bayan Studio’s 7,500 square foot space with 20 foot ceilings and 30 free parking spaces will house two production kilns, 36 pottery wheels, a slab roller, pug mill, work stations, community glazes, stoneware clay, and shared pottery tools. As the studio and our Bayan community grows, so will the shared amenities and memories.

The Evolution of Our Sanctuary

We are currently in a season of intentional preparation. As we navigate the final stages of design, permitting, and occupancy, we are meticulously crafting every inch of Bayan Studio to ensure it meets our vision of a true sanctuary.

Like the clay itself, our space is being shaped with patience and precision. We are deep in the process of refining our 7,500-square-foot atelier—perfecting the airflow, installing our state-of-the-art safety systems, and nurturing our outdoor greenery—all leading toward our Grand Opening in April 2026.

We look forward to welcoming you soon to Center, Create, and Connect.

Bayan Studio Space Design Philosophy

At Bayan Studio, we believe that the art of ceramics is a profound dialogue between the maker, the earth, and the present moment. Occupying 7,500 square feet of light-drenched space with soaring 20-foot ceilings, our studio is designed as a sanctuary where the chaos of the outside world dissolves into the rhythmic hum of the wheel.

The following includes Bayan Studio’s design philosophy that

I. Center: The Foundation of Mindfulness

Before the clay is placed on the wheel, the maker must find their own equilibrium. We have designed the studio to facilitate this internal settling through elemental harmony.

  • The Breath of the Studio: Mindfulness begins with the air we breathe. Our sophisticated Forced Air System acts as the studio’s lungs—actively pulling out particulate-heavy air while pushing in a constant stream of purified, fresh air. This continuous cycle ensures a crisp, oxygenated environment that protects the artisan and sharpens the mind.

  • The Southern Sanctuary: Flooded with South Light exposure, the studio uses the sun as a natural guide. This constant, golden illumination allows you to see the true silhouette and moisture of your work, providing a luminous clarity that anchors you in the "now."

  • A Culture of Safety and Purity: Creativity flourishes when the mind is at ease. Our studio features a state-of-the-art fire alarm system and comprehensive safety protocols. To maintain a pristine sanctuary, we prioritize wet-cleaning practices, ensuring that silica dust is managed at the source, keeping the environment as pure as the raw clay.

II. Create: The Freedom of Flow

True creation requires an environment where technical barriers are removed, leaving only the artist and their medium.

  • The Grand Atelier: With 20-foot ceilings, the physical volume of the space provides the mental "headroom" needed for expansive thinking. This is not a place of mass production, but a place of massive possibility, where the air feels open and the creative spirit has room to rise.

  • State-of-the-Art Precision: We empower the maker with new, professional-grade equipment—from whisper-quiet wheels to programmable, high-efficiency kilns. These tools are extensions of the hand, designed to perform flawlessly so the creative flow remains uninterrupted.

  • Spaces to Imagine: Beyond the wheel, we provide dedicated areas to sketch, hand-build, and experiment, ensuring every artisan has the physical room to evolve their craft.

III. Connect: The Shared Pulse

The final stage of the journey is the bridge between the self, the community, and the earth.

  • The Hearth (The Community Lounge): We believe that "separating from the work" is as vital as the work itself. Our lounge is a dedicated haven where students and members can step away from their projects to fully decompress. It is a space to eat, read, and hydrate; a place for casual conversation and shared laughter. By physically removing oneself from the production area, the mind finds the "white space" necessary for new ideas to bloom.

  • The Shared Pulse: While centering is solitary, growth is communal. Our collaboration areas invite a "shared pulse" where techniques are exchanged and inspiration is found in the work of peers.

  • The Verdant Reset (Outdoor Space): Connection to the earth is literal at Bayan Studio. Our Outdoor Space is a lush sanctuary of greenery and direct sun. It is a place to step out, feel the fresh air, and reconnect with the natural world that provides our material, offering a sensory reset that fuels the next cycle of creation.
